Dr. Nomsa Kafumba, Deputy Medical Director for Maternal and Neonatal Health at Baylor College of Medicine Children’s Foundation – Malawi and a member of the Association of Obstetricians and Gynecologists of Malawi (AOGM), is advancing prevention-focused leadership to improve maternal and adolescent health outcomes in Lilongwe.

Through the WomenLift Health Thematic Leadership Journey, Dr. Kafumba led an initiative titled “Empowering Adolescent Mothers Through Family Planning Advocacy” at Area 25 Community Hospital. The initiative focused on strengthening peer support and advocacy among adolescent mothers, a group that often faces significant barriers to accessing reproductive health information and services.

As part of the project, 18 adolescent mothers were mentored and trained as peer advocates, helping to strengthen their knowledge of family planning, build confidence in making informed reproductive health decisions, and empower them to engage with their communities to promote contraceptive awareness and uptake.

The initiative highlights the value of peer-led approaches in addressing adolescent reproductive health challenges and strengthening prevention-focused interventions at the community level.
