The Association of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Malawi (AOGM) participated in the SUPREME Project Co-design Workshop, which brought together key stakeholders to build a shared understanding of the challenges and opportunities in addressing pre-eclampsia and maternal anaemia in Malawi. Members of the AOGM in attendance included Dr Friday Saidi (President), Dr Taurai Kithinji ( Secretary), Dr William Peno (Treasurer) and Dr. Pempho Nyangulu (Member). The Guest of Honour, Dr Owen Chikhwaza—an AOGM member and current Director of Reproductive Health in the Ministry of Health and Sanitation—also presided over the event. Malawi has made notable progress in reducing the maternal mortality ratio, from 439 in 2015 to 224 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births in 2026. This reflects strong national commitment and sustained action. However, critical gaps remain. Behind every statistic is a life, and too many women continue to die from preventable causes.
The workshop focused on unpacking barriers affecting access to quality care and aligning stakeholders on opportunities for more effective, context-driven interventions. It provided a platform to move beyond identifying challenges toward co-creating practical, sustainable solutions that respond to real needs. In his remarks, Dr Owen Chikhwaza reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to further reducing maternal mortality, with a national target of 70 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births by 2030. Technical Manager at Unitaid, Dale Halliday, emphasized the importance of early stakeholder engagement in designing solutions that are both effective and sustainable.

The SUPREME Project, led by Amref Health Africa and the Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI) with financial support from Unitaid, aims to close the gap between lifesaving interventions for pre-eclampsia and maternal anaemia and the women who need them most.
AOGM remains committed to supporting this initiative through its clinical leadership, advocacy, and mentorship efforts to strengthen quality of care and improve maternal health outcomes across Malawi
