AOGM Partners with MAHECAS to Strengthen Cervical Cancer Screening in Mwanza District

The Association of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Malawi (AOGM) has partnered with Malawi Health Care Support UK (MAHECAS) and the Mwanza District Health Office to implement a six-week cervical cancer screening initiative aimed at expanding access to lifesaving screening services for women and girls in the district.

Speaking during a cheque handover ceremony for the initiative on 09 March 2026, AOGM Project Lead Prof. Luis Gadama highlighted that the campaign aims to reach approximately 20,000 women and girls, particularly in hard-to-reach areas of Mwanza District, with cervical cancer screening services.

MAHECAS Coordinator Lawrence Gogodus noted that the organization is supporting the intervention with approximately K22 million, reflecting a strong commitment to improving women’s health and strengthening cervical cancer prevention efforts in Malawi.

Director of Health and Social Services for Mwanza District, Anthony Chafunya, described the initiative as a timely and important intervention that will help improve both screening coverage and access to treatment for women and girls in the district.

This collaboration builds on previous successful partnerships. In 2021, MAHECAS and partners implemented a similar cervical cancer screening initiative in Chikwawa, demonstrating the impact of coordinated efforts in expanding access to prevention services.

Similarly, at Ndola Teaching Hospital, the mentors engaged with resident trainees and hospital leadership to review training structures and identify opportunities to strengthen resident supervision, infrastructure, and academic activities such as journal clubs and evidence-based seminars.

The mentorship visit also highlighted the importance of regional collaboration in specialist training, emphasizing continuous faculty mentorship, harmonized curricula, and strengthened institutional support to improve the quality of obstetrics and gynecology training programs across the ECSACOG region.
